Choosing the Right Home Improvement Project on a Budget While Increasing Your Home’s Value

One of the biggest challenges we face when doing home improvements is that we get into the problem of feature creep. That is to say, once we start, we start noticing other things we can do or ways to make our project better, more appealing, or more aesthetic. Don’t worry, I am not picking on you, we all do it, and this is why simple little home improvement projects turn into giant and costly ones – it’s just the nature of the beast. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

You can start small and work in components, and choose a home improvement project which is within your means and budget, one which will increase the value of your home and make it more livable too. There are so many very great little projects you can do for under $200 to $300 – if you are careful, catch a few sales, and willing to do the work yourself, and mind you, you don’t have to be “Joe the Fix-it Guy” to pull it off either.

If you really want to add value to your home, you should concentrate on things which add curb appeal. Real Estate folks will tell you that when you make small improvements to the front of your home which accent it nicely, it adds intrinsic value, and will allow your home to command a higher price tag. Bricks lined up along the sidewalk, driveway, or around a planter, or flower bed can do this. Painting the trim has a similar effect. Even putting little white fences along the flower beds helps, and mind you none of those things costs much at all.

Once those things are completed or perhaps you are not contemplating on selling your home anytime soon, then why not look in the backyard, and try some similar projects. Rather than curb appeal, it will give it living appeal, for you and/or your guests too – something you can be proud of, or maybe plant a garden, you’ll save money on expensive vegetables, eat healthier, and feel good about yourself for doing the right thing for you and your family. Besides that, there is something very therapeutic to tending to your own garden.

Maybe you want to save money on your energy bill? Well a home improvement project such as weather-stripping, window sealing, or door seals will do that. You can have a project which will pay for itself in lower energy costs. Indeed, perhaps you need to rethink your needs, desires, and costs. Please consider all this.
